This project was pure fun. Søren Rose Studio, my former employer, bought this 1974, 27 foot-long Airstream as a passion project. Søren -- the owner and creative director -- is from Denmark, and is fascinated by the uniquely American tradition of road-tripping. Together, we set out to make a Scandinavian interpretation of this classic American mobile home.
The essential challenge of this project was to employ high quality, natural materials while obsessively considering their eventual weight. The white oak floor needed to be at once durable and thin, for example. We were uncompromising when it came to the quality of the millwork, custom hardware, and mosaic tile bathroom walls; but were also constantly making adjustments so as to stay below the weight limit.
The outcome was a truly unique piece of mobile architecture, and is now in its rightful place -- on the open road. You can learn more about the project here.
